Invvy vs Xero: When a GST PDF Beats a $37 Ledger
Pick Invvy if you need a GST tax invoice PDF today: no signup, no subscription, draft saved in your browser. Pick Xero if you need books, bank feeds, BAS lodgement, and payroll in one file. Invvy is not an accounting suite. Xero is not a one-off invoice tool.
Last updated: August 2026. Invvy makes a GST-ready invoice PDF in your browser. Xero is cloud accounting: books, bank feeds, BAS, and payroll. If you only need to bill a client, you don't need the suite.

Xero is a trademark of Xero Limited and its related companies. Invvy is an independent invoice generator, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Xero. This page is for people who typed "xero invoice" and then wondered why sending a bill needs a subscription.
What's the difference between Invvy and Xero?
Invvy is a client-side invoice generator: the editor is the homepage, you type the job, and you download an unwatermarked PDF. Xero is online accounting software. Invoicing is one screen inside a file that also holds your bank, GST, bills, payroll, and reports. Same word on the box. Different jobs.
Say you finish a $2,400 website-copy job on 29 August 2026. Invvy's path is: open the Australian tax invoice preset, put your ABN in the from block, itemize the pages, write Due 12 September 2026, download. About ten minutes. Xero's path is: create an organisation, connect a bank, pick a chart of accounts, invite your accountant, then raise invoice 2026-014. That's the right path if you want books. It's a long path if you only want the PDF.
What Invvy actually ships today: four templates (Modern, Classic, Minimal, Bold), 40+ currencies, a GST label you can set to 10%, quotes and receipts and proforma from the same editor, and a draft saved locally in IndexedDB. No email send from the app. No cloud account. No card collection. We built it that way because the question we hear most is still "can I just download it?" Yes.
How much does Xero cost in Australia in 2026?
Xero's cheapest Australian business plan is Ignite at A$37 a month including GST, after the 1 July 2026 rise from A$35. Confirm the live figure on Xero's Australian pricing page, because the first thing you'll see is often an 80% intro for three months, not the regular bill.
We checked that page in August 2026: Grow is A$78, Comprehensive is A$107, Ultimate 10 is A$143. Those figures match the July increase Australian accountants published from Xero's own pricing-update notice. Ignite isn't unlimited invoicing. Xero's own plan notes cap you at 20 invoices and quotes per month, and the cap counts both sending and approving. Connected apps can eat the quota too. Hit the wall and you're looking at Grow.
Payroll on Ignite covers one person, with automated super. You get bank feeds, GST tracking, and a prepared BAS. That's a real accounting product. It's also A$444 a year before add-ons. If you send eight invoices a year, that's A$55.50 of software per PDF. We'd never pay that just to type an ABN onto a page. Xero also dropped the multi-organisation discount in July 2026, so two ABNs now pay two full bills. Promos expire. Budget the regular price.
What do reviewers keep repeating about Xero?

Open the invoice generatorWe checked public reviews in August 2026 on ProductReview.com.au, Capterra, G2, Trustpilot, and Australian small-business threads on Reddit. We're paraphrasing themes, not inventing named quotes. Software panels and consumer sites don't even agree on the score, so treat any single star average as a mood, not a verdict.
On ProductReview.com.au, Xero sat at 3.7 from 1,311 reviews when we opened the listing. Capterra compare pages dated July 2026 put Xero near 4.4 from about 3,300 reviews. We couldn't re-fetch a live Trustpilot or G2 total on this pass, so we're not inventing those numbers. The written themes still cluster.
- Price creep. Reviewers and Australian threads keep returning to July increases and features that used to sit on cheaper tiers. ProductReview's own summary flags subscription cost as the main con.
- Overkill for sole traders. People who only wanted a tax invoice describe a chart of accounts, a bank connection, and a file their accountant prefers. The PDF was never the hard part.
- Bank-feed lock-in. Feeds from the big Australian banks are the reason many stay. They are also the reason leaving hurts: years of coded transactions live in that cloud. When a feed stalls, support themes often amount to wait it out.
- Ticket-only support. Standard plans do not give you a number to ring. ProductReview reviewers praise help when a human appears, and complain about chatbots and the missing phone line when payroll or a feed breaks on a Friday.
- You still need a bookkeeper. Plenty of owners pay for Xero and still pay someone to reconcile it. The software relocates the work. It does not remove it.
None of that makes Xero a poor accounting product. It makes Xero a poor fit for "I finished the job at 4pm and I need a PDF before dinner."
What can Xero do that Invvy cannot?
Xero is better the moment you need books, not a bill. Bank feeds, reconciliation, GST coding, BAS lodgement, Single Touch Payroll, super, repeating invoices, bills, and a live file your accountant can open: Invvy does none of that. We won't pretend otherwise.
- Accounting. Double-entry books, aged receivables, profit and loss, BAS worksheets. Invvy stores a draft in your browser and stops there.
- Bank feeds. Daily imports from Australian banks, then match-to-invoice. Invvy has no bank connection.
- Payroll and STP. Ignite covers one person. Higher plans raise the seat cap. Invvy has no pay runs.
- Send and track. Xero emails the invoice from the app and can attach a pay button. Invvy gives you a PDF. You send it.
- Multi-user. Unlimited users on Xero plans, so a bookkeeper logs in without a new licence. Invvy is one browser.
If your accountant already works in Xero, moving the books to a PDF tool is a bad idea. Keep Xero for the file. Use Invvy only when you need a bill out before the subscription is even set up.
Who should pick Invvy, and who should pick Xero?
Pick Xero if you need books plus a BAS workflow: GST-registered trading, staff, an accountant inside the file, or a bank feed you won't give up. Pick Invvy if you just need to send a tax invoice today, and nothing else.
Freelancers, sole traders, tradies on a Saturday job, and side hustles who invoice a handful of clients fit the Invvy box. Google Trends for Australia over the past year shows xero down about 10% and xero invoice down about 20%. Invoice template australia roughly doubled. Searches for a free or online invoice are up sharply. People still need to get paid. Fewer of them start that search with a suite brand. That gap is the opening for a simple tool.
A café with two casuals, a weekly shop delivery, and a BAS every quarter belongs in Xero (or MYOB). A weekend illustrator sending invoice 2026-003 for $850 does not. Write the due date as a real date. "Net 14" gets decoded by whoever feels like it. "Due 12 September 2026" gets scheduled.
Start with the free generator or an Australian invoice template. No account. No watermark. The PDF is yours. For the wider field, see invoice software.
Can you send an Australian tax invoice without Xero?
Yes. The ATO cares about the fields on the document, not the software logo in the footer. If you're GST-registered you need the words tax invoice, your identity, your ABN, the issue date, what you sold with quantity and price, and the GST. Software is optional.
ATO tax-invoice rules and business.gov.au's invoicing guide also want you to show which sales are taxable, and to name the buyer (or their ABN) on sales of $1,000 or more. You must issue a tax invoice within 28 days if a customer asks, unless the sale is $82.50 or less including GST. If you're not GST-registered, don't put "tax invoice" on the page. Use "invoice", still put your ABN on business-to-business bills, and skip the GST line. How to invoice as a freelancer covers the personal-name case.
You can fill one now: AUD tax invoice with GST at 10%. This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Rules vary, and we don't know your registration or your accountant's process. Check with a qualified professional before you act on it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Invvy a Xero alternative?
Only for invoicing. Invvy replaces the create-invoice, download-PDF step. It doesn't replace bank feeds, BAS, payroll, bills, or an accountant login. If that's all you were using Xero for, you can leave the suite. If your books live there, keep Xero and use Invvy for the odd PDF you need tonight.
Does Xero have a free invoice plan?
No lasting free business plan. Xero sells subscriptions. New Australian customers sometimes get a deep intro discount (80% off the first three months when we checked in August 2026), then Ignite returns to A$37 a month. There is a trial. After that you pay, even if you only send two invoices.
How many invoices can I send on Xero Ignite?
Twenty invoices and quotes per month, and the cap applies to both sending and approving. Partner-app transactions can count toward it. Hit the wall and Xero points you at Grow at A$78 a month for unlimited invoices. Invvy does not cap PDF downloads.
Can I use Invvy if my accountant uses Xero?
Yes for the bill you send the client. Your accountant can still book the sale in Xero from the PDF or the bank credit. Do not try to run two live books. Give them the PDF and the payment reference, and let them code it. Ask once how they want the invoice numbered so their file stays clean.
Does Invvy email invoices or take card payments?
No. Not today. There is no send button and no pay link we operate. You download the unwatermarked PDF, attach it to your own email, and print BSB, account, or PayID on the page. Xero can email from the app and attach online invoice payments, with payment fees on top of the subscription.
Is Xero worth it for a sole trader who only invoices?
Often no. Ignite is A$444 a year and still caps you at 20 invoices a month. If you are not reconciling a bank feed, not lodging BAS from the file, and not running payroll, you are buying a suite to print a page. A free PDF plus a folder of paid invoices is enough for many sole traders until an accountant says otherwise.
